Hello, nice that you have landed on my website. I’m Roger and would love to explain to you where Zegepraal comes from. .
After a long ‘career’ in the basements of amateur football, I ran my first marathon in Amsterdam on October 16, 2016. In the car back home, in all enthusiasm, it was decided that the IronMan 140.6 in my birth and hometown of Maastricht would be a ‘logical next step’. And so it happened. In preparation for that triathlon, I was on a road bike for the first time on November 18, 2016. The same period also saw the start of swimming lessons. After months of training, I crossed the finish line in Maastricht’s Market Square on August 6, 2017 and heard the iconic words ‘Roger, you are an IRONMAN’. I still get goosebumps when I think back on that.
I love doing sports. For me, it is more than a hobby, it really is part of my life. I enjoy swimming and running, but nothing beats a nice ride on a road bike. As said, living in Maastricht, I have the Heuvelland and the Voerstreek in my backyard. So in recent years I have spent many free hours in the Limburg hills.
These days, my road bike also goes with me on holidays where I explore the surroundings from the saddle. I’ve been to Mallorca, for instance, and I’ve done beautiful rides in the Vosges, the Ziller Valley, the Dolomites, on Lake Garda and around Saalbach. In 2022 and 2023 I also took part in ‘The RIDE’, which involved cycling from the foot of Mont Ventoux and the Stelvio in eight stages to the Cauberg. 1,300 KM and 20,000 HM counted each edition. Since then, I can tick cols like Mont Ventoux, Col du Glandon, Alpe d’Huez, Ballon d’Alsace, Passo dello Stelvio, Ofenpas, Col de la Schlucht and many others off my bucket list.
But why then Zegepraal I hear you think?
I was looking for a tangible souvenir to record my achievements. While there were already suppliers on the market, I did not like the graphics of these. So I came up with the idea of making them myself, initially for myself. After feedback from family, friends and some cycling buddies, my posters turned out to be popular. And so Zegepraal was ‘born’.
